    Household

When you look around your house, you are likely to find many things made from animal products. Carpets are common made from wool. Curtain joints are often made from leather. Sealants and glues are commonly made from animal products. Many articles of furniture also often contain animal products. As you pursue your vegan journey you will become more and more aware of this. Once again, the important thing is that you make up your own mind on how you come to terms with this. No one else has the answers for you.

The Vegan Society definition of veganism is: ‘… a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals …’

There is a good reason why the words ‘—as far as is possible and practicable—’ are in this definition. You need to decide how you want to deal with this. It is important for your own peace of mind that you listen to your own conscience and feel good about your decisions. They are your decisions. No one else has the only right answer, and you are not answerable to anyone else. Be kind to yourself. Every step you take in pursuit of your vegan journey benefits you, the environment, and many animals. Just keep thinking, and keep taking small steps that make sense to you.
