Another area of concern, you will become aware of soon after going vegan, is the degree to which animal products have injected themselves in many aspects of the accessory market. There are the obvious belts, bags, shoes, and wallets made of leather. There are also many products (like jeans) that often come with a small leather patch carrying the brand name on a pocket. Often leather creeps into reinforced corners of clothing and the like.
Many book covers include leather. Many cars have leather seats. It was common for older cars to have leather seals inside their carburettors. Commercial airlines, shipping, and public transport generally all use vehicles that usually contain leather.
When you realise the prevalence of animal products through the accessory market (and many other markets in general), it can be extremely depressing. You need to decide on a personal level how you want to come to terms with this, and whatever you decide is right for you, because this is and extremely personal thing to deal with. Never the less, you will hear opinions from many people on how they believe other people should behave. As we have said previously, veganism has an element of idealism which you need reconcile in your own life view. It is not always helpful listening to other people’s view points on how you should act.
