Many clothes are made from animal parts. Some aspects of this are obvious. Others are more subtle. When you start thinking about this you will begin thinking about how this effects your wardrobe choices both now and in the future.
The Vegan Society definition of veganism is: ‘… a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals …’
If you are new to veganism (and you are not a nudist!) you will already have an investment in a number of sets of clothes, and many of these will probably be made from animal products. So, what are you going to do? We suggest you think about two things before you make any decisions. Firstly, think about the phrase ‘—as far as is possible and practicable—’ in the Vegan Society’s definition. Secondly, make your own mind up about what works for you. Don’t look to someone else to have the answers for you. You need to come up with long term goals for yourself and a transition plan to get from where you are now to where you want to be.
Whatever you decide is your decision. You have to feel good about it. And you may change or refine it any time you like in the future
There are many vegan fashion brands emerging in the Parisian fashion markets like those in the image above.
