Many people progress from thinking about becoming more healthy, to increasing their exercise, improving their diet, to vegetarianism, to veganism. At some point along the way they come across the term ‘organics’ and assume it is all part of the same journey.
Organics is not veganism. It has nothing to do with veganism. Organic farming practices are applicable to all aspects of farming including the production of vegan foods such as fruit and vegetables. They are also applicable to farming practices associated with the raising of animals for food. Do not assume food to be vegan because it is organic. Vegans looking for organic food need to ascertain produce is both organic and vegan
At a simplistic level, organic food is just food that has been grown without being sprayed with non-organic chemicals. But really, organics is all about an holistic approach to agriculture that focuses on the long term health of the soil, the land, the water supplies, the consumers and farm workers. It focuses on ecological balance and the quality of the environment.
Organic farming does not use the massive range of poisonous non-organic agrichemical concoctions that are so prevalent in traditional agriculture. The first thing one needs to think about when considering the range of information available on organic agricultural practices is the impact of organic farming on the profits of the giant agrochemical companies. In case it is not painfully obvious, if all international farming were to go organic, companies like Monsanto would have a problem considering their current product range is largely non-organic agrichemicals.
It has been discussed elsewhere in this website that one needs to consider the problems associated with funding bias when considering the available body of research on any topic. Big business with billions of dollars invested in their markets are regularly found to have elaborate holding company structures that appear to be designed purposely to hide the funding of research they claim to support their business practices. The agrichemical industry has a vested interest in identifying and funding science workers that will put their name to studies promoting their products.
One interesting study from the European Parliamentary Research Service that discussed the benefits to human health and to the environment from organic food and organic agriculture is available here: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/RegData/etudes/STUD/2016/581922/EPRS_STU(2016)581922_EN.pdf
